Which boats suit a Hiab?
Dinghies, small motor boats, RIBs, narrowboat sections and smaller yachts are typical Hiab loads. Larger yachts may need a mobile crane or specialist boat haulier. The deciding factors are total weight, length and how far the boat must be lifted from where the lorry stands.
Working out the weight
Use the builder’s figure as a starting point, then add the engines, fuel, water, batteries and gear on board, which can add a lot. Empty tanks and remove loose equipment where possible, and tell the operator the full weight.
Lifting and support
- Boats are usually lifted with soft strops, often with a spreader bar so the hull isn’t squeezed
- Know where the strops should go: many hulls are marked, or the builder can advise
- Arrange a suitable cradle or trailer at the delivery end before the lorry arrives
- Marinas and boatyards often have their own rules for craning and insurance, so check before booking
What to send for a quote
Give the boat type, length, beam and total weight, both locations, and photos of the access and where the boat will sit.
