What is a fly jib?
A fly jib is an extra boom section fitted to the end of the main crane boom. It adds reach and height and lets the crane lift over obstacles. The trade-off is that it lowers how much the crane can lift, especially at full extension.
Reach and lifting capacity
Lorry loader cranes are rated in tonne-metres, which describes how load and outreach trade off. A crane that lifts several tonnes close to the lorry may manage only a few hundred kilograms at its furthest reach. The crane’s load chart sets the real limits, and only the operator can confirm them for your lift.
Larger cranes with a fly jib can reach well over 20 metres. Whether that is enough depends on where the lorry can stand. Measure from the nearest point the lorry can park to where the load must land.
Typical long reach jobs
- Roof plant, air conditioning units and solar equipment
- Steel beams and building materials lifted over a house to the rear
- Hot tubs, garden rooms and sheds placed in back gardens
- Signage, billboards and lighting installed at height
Getting a reliable quote
Send the load’s weight and size, the horizontal distance and height it must reach, and photos showing where the lorry can stand and anything in the way, such as cables, trees or a roofline.
Common questions
Can a Hiab lift a hot tub over a house?
Often, using a long reach crane or fly jib, if the hot tub’s weight is within the crane’s capacity at that distance. Drain it first and give the operator the dry weight and the measured distance.
