What machinery Hiabs move
Typical loads include CNC machines, lathes, presses and other workshop equipment, as well as compressors, plant, agricultural machinery and fabricated steel assemblies. A Hiab suits loads that can be lifted from outside or through a large door. Machines deep inside a building usually also need skates or machine movers to bring them to the door.
Information the operator needs
Machines are rarely evenly balanced. The operator plans the slinging around the lifting points and centre of gravity, so share whatever the manufacturer provides.
- The machine’s weight, from the manufacturer’s plate or manual, plus anything attached such as tooling, oil or coolant
- Its dimensions and where its centre of gravity is, if known
- Whether it has certified lifting points or eyes, and whether a lifting beam is needed
- Photos of the machine, the route out and both sites
Planning and responsibility
Every lift must be planned by a competent person (LOLER 1998). If you hire a Hiab with an operator, you may stay responsible for planning the lift. With a contract lift, the lifting company takes that on. Agree in writing which applies, especially for heavy or high-value machines.
Common questions
Do I need a machinery mover as well as a Hiab?
If the machine has to come out of a building without a door the crane can reach through, yes, usually. Many Hiab operators can arrange or provide skates and a crew, so ask when you enquire.
